Year 2 is all about developing independence and confidence and preparing for the next step up to Key Stage 2. The children begin to problem solve inside and outside the classroom and extend their stamina with their written work, with consistent support from the teacher in this.
We also take the responsibility of nurturing the children seriously, and to support them with this we ensure that children are treated as individuals through small group work, 1:1 reading, listening to their worries and concerns and celebrating their achievements.
The Teaching Assistants work with specific groups both in and out of class to provide additional support both for all abilities.
We follow a very creative curriculum to engage, stimulate and challenge the children and we promote a sense of collaboration and thus teamwork in all that we learn and do. Curriculum topics are carefully chosen each term to coincide, and this provides the children with learning and knowledge where they can find links and draw similarities. We believe this enables a holistic, well-rounded curriculum experience.
Year 2 SATs
In the first half of the summer term, the children will complete SATs. These will consist of 2 Maths tests (1 reasoning paper & 1 arithmetic), 2 reading comprehension papers, and SPaG (spelling and grammar test). The children’s writing will be assessed by the class teacher over the course of the year.
Trips
It is not all classroom learning in Year 2, and over the course of the year we go on relevant and engaging trips. The favourites of these are the Science Museum where we explore a world of different materials and their properties, and Brighton, where we have a picnic on the beach, visit sea life Brighton and even dip our toes in the sea!
