Intent

How We Teach Art at St Anne’s

At St. Anne’s Primary School, we believe that high-quality Art lessons will inspire children to appreciate and interpret what they observe, communicate what they feel and create what they imagine. Our Art curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children will be introduced to high quality, well-organised lesson plans where the children will have the opportunity to develop skills of drawing, painting, applying the formal elements, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art. We will also be given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will be encouraged to develop three different projects to be displayed around the school throughout the year. We believe these projects are an excellent idea for the children to develop a self-critical opinion, evaluate their work and to learn to identify new techniques and different artists. They should also know how art and design both reflects and shapes our history and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation

Implementation

· At St. Annes we teach a wide range of art and design techniques, using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space from EYFS to Y6.

· Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.

· Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

· Different projects are organised during the year to involve the whole school into a common learning.

· All the lessons are well prepared and organised through Kapow for all the teachers to get a free access and help them to plan their Art lessons more efficiently.

Design and Technology

Intent

How we Teach D&T at St Annes

DT is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. We intend for all children to acquire appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum.  Using creativity and imagination, children can design and make products that solve real problems within a variety of contracts. Children learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative and capable.  At St. Anne’s Primary School, we believe that high-quality DT lessons will inspire children to learn through their designs by planning their projects and evaluating their ideas. Children will be encouraged to develop different projects of structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food. We believe that DT helps the children to learn Maths and English as well as other compulsory subjects in a fun manner and put these subjects into context making them easier to digest and more understandable for the youngest children.

Implementation

• A range of skills being taught ensuring that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken.
• Development of children’s critical thinking through the evaluation of their own projects and work.
• Children are provided with specific vocabulary to develop their knowledge and vocabulary in DT.
• DT in EYFS beginning to be introduce through gardening, textures and healthy habits to learn where our food comes from and the importance of a balanced, healthy and varied diet.
• From EYFS to Y6 cooking and preparing food has to be taught for the children to understand the importance of a good healthy and balanced diet.
• Electrical systems will be introduced from Y4 onwards.
• Mechanisms, structures and textiles will be taught across the school from EYFS to Y6.
